Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Crimson red, there’s a certain sweetness to the aromas packed with ripe, wild strawberry, red and black cherries, mulberries and black currant. Nice and pure Helderberg fruit. This is a stylish wine with added earthy, savoury notes on both the nose and the palate. The texture is made velvet by the richness of fruit held in balance by its superb gravelly tannin structure and juicy acidity. There’s a sense of clarity that 2017 shows – allowing for upfront drinkability but also serious ageing potential.

Rust en Vrede Estate Vinyards Syrah 2017

The Estate Vineyards Syrah is elegant in 2016. Medium-bodied with a purple rim, the nose is shy at first and majestically opens with time in the glass. Notes of olive tapenade, red berries, vanilla and milk chocolate show its fine complexity and depth. The palate is darker, with a wild streak and mineral core. A hint of roasted herbs and cured meats lead to fine grained tannins on a soft, fruity finish. This juicy Syrah drinks well in its youth but will keep nicely for 5 years.

Rust en Vrede Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The epitome of the Helderberg and what it means for Cabernet Sauvignon fruit show in this wine. Decidedly dense black fruit, such as brambles and blackcurrant combine effortlessly with tobacco, forest floor, graphite and smokiness on the nose and the palate. It’s a complex, moreish wine that allows 2016 to show its fruit.

Rust en Vrede 1694 Classification 2016

The 2015 1694 is pitch black in colour with a glossy, glass-coating rim. Plush new oak, sweet spice and seductive fruit dazzle the nose with opulence and depth. Ripe figs and bacon lead to dark chocolate, vanilla and blueberry compote on the palate. It is both succulent and titanic, as the Shiraz majority gives it sweet tannins, hints of wild thyme and enticing violets. Suave and multi-dimensional, the palate is monumentally powerful and exquisitely plush. Black fruit layers line a long and luxurious finish. Expect the Cabernet Sauvignon to show more presence in the blend as the wine ages over the next decade.
