Boekenhoutskloof Porcupine Chenin Blanc 2016

Although at first relatively shy, the nose displays a melange of fruit salad with aromas of greengage, fresh lime, yellow apple, green melon - even whiffs of angelica and lemon verbena - creating complexity. The tropical character follows through onto the palate, with flavours of passion fruit, guava, pineapple and papaya.

The mid-palate is slightly flinty, yet balanced, with a medium body and vibrant, integrated acidity. Hints of preserved quince, green fig and tarragon lingers on the palate with a nostalgic streak of chalky minerality.

Origin: WO Western Cape

Grape Varities: 100% Chenin Blanc

Alc. 12,95% vol.

Residual Sugar: 1,81g/l

Total Acidity: 4,55g/l

pH: 3,43

Wine makers comments:

The ongoing drought certainly played a role again in the 2018 vintage, resulting in smaller berries and lower yields, yet offering concentrated fruit. Cooler night temperatures in the renowned Swartland region, without prolonged heat waves during the day, created a favourable diurnal range and ripening conditions. The grapes were harvested with good natural analyses, reflecting the even ripening process.

Striving for freshness and an attractive fruit character, balance and structure in our Chenin, the juice was fermented with yeast strains promoting this profile. Through meticulous blending we achieved the perfect balance in our Porcupine Ridge Chenin Blanc, adhering to the philosophy of quality above all else.

Boekenhoutskloof Porcupine Sauvignon Blanc 2019

The nose is delicate and saline, but intrigues with its apple blossom, green melon, and stone fruit aromas and gentle whiffs of dill, lime, grapefruit and nettles. The palate is smooth and textured and surprises with its intensity of green and tropical fruit flavours, showing nectarine, pear, papaya, greengage, even gooseberry. The wine is supple and round, yet focused, with balanced acidity. It finishes with white peach, green fig and lemongrass lingering in the mouth with hints of tarragon and chalk – perfect for summer. Delicious on its own or enjoy with chicken schnitzel with fresh lemon, sushi, goat’s milk cheese or a seafood platter.

Origin: WO Western Cape

Grape Varities: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Alc. 12,73% vol.

Residual Sugar: 1,37g/l

Total Acidity: 5,89g/l

pH: 3,35

Wine makers comments:

Grapes from Robertson, Stellenbosch and as far afield as the West Coast, were used for our 2018 vintage, crafting an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc with diverse characteristics. Although dry growing conditions prevailed during the 2018 growing season and ripening period, we were blessed with a healthy fruit profile. The wine again displays perfect varietal typicity with great intensity of fruit flavour and a fleshy mouthfeel. Fermentation took place in stainless steel under controlled temperature conditions prior to blending.

Boekenhoutskloof Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2019

The nose shows an intriguing savoury character, juxtaposed against an abundance of heady perfume, white pepper, black cherry and red plum aromas. Violets, liquorice and dark berry fruit follow through onto the mid-palate, with notes of black pepper, cloves, black cardamom and star anise. The wine is balanced and focused, elegant yet complex with smooth, velvety tannins. The spicy, grippy finish lingers with hints of cocoa, black olives and violets.

Grape Varities: 100% Syrah

Alc. 14,62% vol.

Residual Sugar: 3,3g/l

Total Acidity: 5,11g/l

pH: 3,72

Wine makers comments:

Our Syrah for this wine is sourced solely from the Swartland, renowned for its small berries and un- irrigated vineyards.

We are continually striving to show the unique climate and sunny shale soils of this terroir in the wine.

2017 was again a challenging vintage due to the ongoing drought, resulting in low yields with exceptionally small berries, however increasing the skin to pulp ratio.

The lack of continual heat waves and cool night temperatures attributed to beautiful perfumey Syrah flavours and exceptional structure and balance. The grapes were crushed with good natural analyses.

Minimal interference remains our philosophy and older French oak barriques are always used to accentuate predominant fruit flavours.

Boekenhoutskloof Porcupine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The nose is quite intense and offers classic black fruit with whiffs of cranberry, cigar box, graphite and subtle perfume.

The blueberry and blackberry character of the nose follows through onto a well- rounded mid-palate, with notes of thyme, oregano and rosemary and pencil lead, tobacco, cedar and spice derived from the French oak.

The wine is medium bodied, smooth and lithe, yet with enough structure provided by its fine, cocoa powdery tannins and a vibrant acidity to balance. A pleasant garrigue character lingers on a composed finish with hints of dark chocolate.

Drinks exceptionally well now or enjoy within the next two to three years with beef stew, venison steak, roast lamb and meaty tomato based Italian dishes.

Grape Varities: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Alc. 14,29% vol.

Residual Sugar: 2,94g/l

Total Acidity: 4,981g/l

pH: 3,79

Vinification & Wine makers comments:

Our grapes are sourced mainly from the Helderberg area near Stellenbosch.

Cabernet Sauvignon is known to ripen relatively late here, which means that the vines and grapes are far less subjected to the much warmer temperatures experienced during early summer.

Even ripening is thus ensured and this contributes to the quality of wines made from this area.

We used a small percentage of Cabernet Franc again this year to enhance the flavour profile, lending a silky texture and subtle fragrance to our cuvée.

The smart use of French oak for 9 months lends complexity and structure without overpowering the wine.

Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block 2018

The nose is exceptionally perfumed with an abundance of complex red and dark berry fruit, violets and intense aromas of white pepper. Dark brooding fruit follows through onto a structured, opulent palate with notes of cardamom, cumin, cloves and black pepper. The midpalate is rich, textured and balanced with integrated acidity, cocoa powdery tannins and a definite cedarwood character derived from French oak. White pepper lingers on a smooth, lifted finish.

Grape Varities: 79% Syrah, 11% Grenache Noir, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cinsault, 1% Viognier

Region: Swartland

Alc. 14,39% vol.

Residual Sugar: 3,36g/l

Total Acidity: 4,18g/l

pH: 3,73

Vinification & Wine makers comments:

The 2017 Chocolate Block is a blend of Syrah (79%), Grenache Noir (11%), Cabernet Sauvignon (6%), Cinsault (3%) and Viognier (1%).

Due to the looming drought conditions, yields were much lower, resulting in higher berry concentration and healthier grapes.

Phenolic ripeness was easily achieved, with the harvesting of grapes taking place earlier, during the cooler stages of the harvest period.

The increased volume of Grenache Noir in the blend enhances the flavour profile significantly,

with Syrah being our structural backbone. The Grenache was matured in 600L barrels to retain its unmistakable fruity aromas and vibrancy.

The wine matures in 1st (all of the Cabernet Sauvignon), 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels as well as 2500L French oak foudres for 16 months

before it undergoes a light egg-white fining and filtration. 1 979 barriques were selected for our 2016 vintage.
