The terrain of the south-facing vineyards was formed during the ice ages, and features loess covered shingle, melaphyre having been introduced to the vineyard 100 years ago as a result of mining in the area. Distinctive wines with complex aromas and flavor are the result. No superficial charm here, this wine is looking forward with confidence and character to a bright future.

No denial of the copper mine origins for this complex wine.

“Vom Vulkan” (formerly Schlossböckelheimer): solely deriving from our VDP „Grosse Lage Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube, the same site which in a few years to come, will produce our „Kupferberg GG“.

A hint of flint, rhubarb, orange zest together with the sweet scent of ripe stone- and exotic fruits. Bastei GG "Late Release Riesling dry 2015

After two full years spent maturing on the lees, we are proud to release our 2015 vintage BASTEI GG (Grand Cru) to the market on 1 September 2017. The 2015 vintage from the Bastei is warm and supple, very attractive for its subtle elegance coupled with its minerality. Showing black currants, oranges and blossom honey in the nose, creamy and spicy, our Bastei GG envelops the palate, enchanting with the charm of tropical fruit woven together with fresh herbal notes.

The vineyard Bastei offers more than just a spectacular view. Protected by the powerful cliffs of the Rotenfels and cooled by the brisk breezes blowing through the open valley on the other side, this site produces spectacular grapes as well. In short: extremely small, extremely dramatic, extremely refined.

Grape Varities: Riesling

Tasting: Dry

Classification: Selection VDP Grosses Gewächs / Grand Cru Level

Food pairing:

The Bastei shines in even the most daring of culinary combinations: Hot smoked salmon with roasted beets, grilled lobster on a bed of saffron risotto & mussels, fillet of beef with black salsify and rosemary jus...

Serve temperature: 8-10°C

Alc.: 12,5% vol.

Residual sugar: 2,1g/l

Acidity: 8,2g/l

Optimal drinking: 2017-2025

The vineyard is situated directly beneath the tallest rock face north of the Alps. The vines are deeply rooted in a rocky volcanic soil called rhyolite, cooled by constant breezes. The imposing Rotenfels watches over them, storing heat from the day to distribute as warmth in the evening. At daytime it’s quite hot here, while the nights are significantly cooler; this results in a spectacular wine from a spectacular site. The meagre and stony soils produce mineral-driven and racy Rieslings with a distinctive character of fruit.

Rotenberg Riesling GG 2015 dry

Argillaceous slate imparts charm to the Rotenberg GG, while the volcanic stone porphyry brings a sense of purity and delineation. The 2016 GG from the Rotenberg is gripping and sophisticated, a wine with great depth and complexity that demands focus and attention on the part of the taster. It enchants the nose with a wide palette of fruit aromas: nectarine, peach, citrus and red currants complemented with floral notes. On the palate the wine is stony and mineral-driven, with bright fruit and a tart spiciness.

Grape Varities: Riesling

Tasting: Dry

Classification: VDP Grosses Gewächs / Grand Cru Level

Food pairing:

For a dinner-table partner we would recommend langoustines with hungarian Paprika and red curry, or perhaps veal schnitzel (unbreaded) with a salad of chanterelles.

Serve temperature: 8-12°C

Vinification: Halbstück (600L cask) & stainless steel tank

Alc.: 12,5% vol.

Residual sugar: 3,8g/l

Acidity: 8,4g/l

Optimal drinking: 2017-2025

Soil: Vines up to 70 years of age planted in porphyry, ‘Rotliegend’ and argillaceous slate. This is the vineyard furthest away from the cellar of Gut Hermannsberg, in the Alsenztal – a side- valley off the Nahe, just a stone’s throw away. Its steep south-facing hillsides rise high above Altenbamberg, with soils developed during the Rotliegend period, which are permeated with rhyolite (formerly called quartz porphyry). The reddish colour indicates high iron content, and has thus given the site its name. The correspondingly unique mineral character of the wine sets the Rotenberg apart. Light breezes that play around its summit bring that certain extra something that allows the clusters to ripen until quite late in the season.
