Vergelegen Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Pure, vibrant aromas of lime blossom, gooseberry, ripe guava, fresh passion fruit, white pepper and quince.  Shows amazing elegance, balancing perfect acidity with ripe fruit. The 2016 harvest was exceptionally early with harvesting of Sauvignon Blanc commencing on 29 January and finishing on 9 February and due to the worst drought since 1904, the crop for white grapes was reduced by 50%.  The wine is very satisfying and one of the most remarkable adventures since I started here in 1998. Please enjoy chilled with fresh asparagus, grilled or baked fish and chicken kebabs. The grapes for this premium Sauvignon Blanc were all from Vergelegen’s own vineyards.

Vinification:

Grapes from the selected vineyards were hand harvested at peak ripeness and transported to the Vergelegen cellar in wooden bins.  Parcels were selected and these parcels could be individual rows or fractions of blocks and everything was vinified separately. No chemical or enzymatic additions were made and we re-examined and reviewed everything that was accepted as protocols over the previous 18 vintages.  To add complexity, musts and finished wines were kept in contact with their lees by stirring at least once daily.

Beautifully refined and elegant. This is the 5th year that entirely Estate-grown grapes have been used in the making of the Premium Chardonnay. The vineyards were cropped at 6 tons/ha - 70% of the grapes were barrel fermented and the rest in wooden tanks.  Selections were made in August 2016 before bottling in November 2016.  The grapes selected for this premium Chardonnay were sourced from Vergelegen’s Korhaan, Rooiland,  Rocklands , Slanghoek and Lower Schaapenberg vineyards.

Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay

Alc. 14,26% vol.

Residual sugar: 1,5g/l

Total acidity: 5,8g/l

All the different vineyards were barrel fermented and matured on the lees for 8 months before bottling in November 2016.  Released: end January 2018.

The grapes are de-stemmed but not crushed and the grapes/must cold soaked for 7 days followed by a feral fermentation lasting 4 days, after which cultured yeast was added and fermented until dry.  The young red wine was then macerated on the skins for a further 6-7 weeks before going into barrel for 18 months (20% new) and finally bottled in early December 2014.  Released September 2019.

Vergelegen Merlot Reserve 2015

Ripe plum colour with a ruby rim.  The nose shows ripe fruit flavours, black cherries, plum, spice and a touch of chocolate.  The ripeness of the fruit is balanced by fresh fruit acidity with soft wood and fruit tannins.  The aftertaste is long and lasting.

Grape varieties: 100% Merlot

Alc. 14,5% vol.

Residual sugar: 4,4g/l

Total acidity: 5,6g/l

pH: 3,5

The fruit was picked at peak physiological ripeness to avoid the necessity of adding acid and prevent the extraction of hard tannins. Picking took place from 6 to 20 March 2013. The grape juice was inoculated with two yeast strains, D21 and D254. Fermentation took place at a consistent 25°C.  The young wine was left to macerate on its skins for a further 7 weeks before pressing.  Malolactic fermentation was induced in stainless steel tanks and was followed by maturation in 225l French oak barrels for 16 months before bottling on 16 October 2014. The vintage amounted to 45 500 bottles.  Released March 2017.

The grapes are always sourced from the Rondekop Vineyards.  Grown at 200-220 metres above sea level, these vineyards are extremely wind exposed and this leads to thick skinned berries that deliver very concentrated juice.

Alc. 14,52% vol.

Residual sugar: 2,94g/l

Vergelegen V 2013

The 2013 V is a composed and elegant Cabernet dominated wine with supple tannins and a long aftertaste.  The wine can be enjoyed on release but will most definitely improve over the next 20 years.

Origin: Stellenbosch

The vineyard used for the production of the V is Stone Pine IV. This vineyard consists of two adjacent units on the west to northwest facing inland slopes of Schaapenberg.  It is relatively sheltered from the prevailing breezes coming off False Bay and therefore enjoys a slightly warmer but still predominantly maritime climate. The two units are planted on Hutton and Glenrosa soils and are both well drained and slightly limiting on vigour, but still offer a good buffer capacity supporting the vines in adverse climatic conditions. This combination of soil, climate and site ensures full ripening of the fruit without excessively high sugar levels.
